Landscape and Wildlife Photography
JIM HANSEN - ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am a nature photographer. Art and nature have always been at the forefront of my being. Over the years I have experimented with many different media, but I have always come back to photography. I discovered a long time ago that through photography I am best able to capture the visions of nature that I perceive while in the field. I am compelled to photograph nature because of my great love for it. I see it as an evolutionary step that fulfills not only my need to immerse myself in nature, but also to play out or sublimate our genetically encoded needs as “hunters / gatherers”. I see myself, in part, as a photographic hunter and gatherer.
I began photographing nature as a child with an old “Brownie” box camera, (as so many others of my generation also have). I have since kept up with the progression of technology, having first spent many years shooting with 35mm cameras and transparency film. For about the past 14 years I have been using digital equipment exclusively. I personally process each image myself, primarily with Photoshop and related software. Although I used to do my own ink-jet printing, it has now become more cost effective and time efficient to leave the printing up to the professionals.
I have only recently made any serious attempts to market my photography, largely due to the great time and energy restraints brought on by the full-time, stressful occupations that I have chosen. Upon full retirement in 2015 I began in earnest to continue acquiring the necessary professional equipment, participate in ongoing training including professional level feedback, hone my post-processing skills, add to my existing body of work, and explore marketing potentials. I generally capture new images on a weekly basis.
It is my hope that, through my images, (as well as those of others), an increasing number of people will be captivated enough to begin to adapt the same awe and respect that I have developed through my life-long relationship with nature. Wilderness and intact ecosystems will only survive in the future if enough people and institutions learn to love, respect, and nurture them.
This website is a work in progress. Many new images will be added. A blog is a strong possibility in the near future. A section will be added which will enable quick and easy ordering of prints.
Thanks for visiting my website!
